ZUMIX was founded in 1991 by Bob Grove and Madeleine Steczynski in response to youth violence in Boston. Starting as a summer songwriting program with just 24 youth and $200, ZUMIX has grown to serve over 1,000 young people annually through diverse programs. The organization has also renovated a historic firehouse into a vibrant cultural space, achieving Gold LEED Certification for its eco-friendly design.
