Our Story

The Zen Caregiving Project, originally known as the Zen Hospice Project, was founded in 1986 by Zen practitioner Martha deBarros and members of the San Francisco Zen Center. This organization emerged from a deep concern for the suffering of the homeless population in San Francisco, many of whom faced death on the streets. By providing compassionate care through a volunteer program rooted in mindfulness and service, ZCP has evolved to focus on training caregivers in mindfulness and compassion, supporting those who care for individuals with chronic and terminal illnesses.

Impact

For over 30 years, the Zen Caregiving Project has been a leader in the hospice movement in the U.S., offering training and support to caregivers. Through educational programs designed to enhance caregiver resilience and well-being, ZCP has positively impacted countless caregivers and their patients. Collaborations with health systems and community organizations have expanded its reach, ensuring caregivers receive the essential support they need.
