About the Zach Helfrich Memorial Fund
All who knew Zach Helfrich remember his infectious smile, sense of humor, and kindness. At just 19 years old, Zach had graduated from Baker High School and was set to attend Virginia Tech, having been accepted into the prestigious Corps of Cadets, US Army ROTC. His lifelong dream was to serve in the military. Tragically, Zach took his own life on August 16, 2019. The Zach Helfrich Memorial Fund was established to honor his memory by raising awareness about mental health and reducing the prevalence of suicide among young people.
Our Impact
The Zach Helfrich Memorial Endowment at the Upstate Foundation supports the Psychiatry High Risk Program (PHRP) at Upstate Medical University. This highly effective outpatient treatment center provides critical support for adolescents and young adults at high risk of suicide. The PHRP has a proven track record of saving lives, treating teenagers aged 14 and older, many of whom have faced multiple suicide attempts.
