Our Story

Founded in 1878, YWCA Central Maine began as a service provider for women immigrating to Lewiston to work in the mills. Originally known as the Women’s Benevolent Association, it offered housing, language classes, job training, and recreation to help working women thrive. Today, the organization continues to evolve, providing programming that builds community through strengthening inter-cultural relationships and valuing the needs and contributions of all members.
