In March 2005, a group of Yale undergraduate students traveled to Batey Libertad for a week-long service-learning trip. This experience ignited a passion for supporting the community, leading to the formation of Yspaniola as an on-campus student organization. In 2009, Yspaniola was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to providing high-quality education from preschool to university for the residents of Batey Libertad and similar communities.
