Our Story

Founded in 1893 by Grace Whitney Hoff and a group of dedicated women, the Young Women's Christian Association of Metropolitan Detroit has a rich history of advocating for women's rights and social justice. From its inception, the YWCA has focused on improving the lives of women and families in Detroit, addressing critical issues such as domestic violence, racism, and women's empowerment.

In 2022, the YWCA served nearly 1 million individuals through various programs, with a significant focus on women and people of color.
