Founded in 1941 by Theodore and Martha Lee Klein, Yew Dell Botanical Gardens began as a family farm and nursery on 34 acres of picturesque Oldham County, Kentucky. The Kleins cultivated a diverse array of crops and livestock, while also establishing a renowned ornamental plant nursery specializing in yews and hollies. Over the years, Theodore Klein's craftsmanship transformed the property into a unique landscape, featuring hand-carved stones, intricate woodwork, and the iconic castle pool house.

Following Klein's passing in 1998, community volunteers recognized the importance of preserving this historic site. They successfully raised funds to purchase the property, initiating a restoration plan to share its beauty with the public. Yew Dell was designated a Preservation Project by The Garden Conservancy and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, solidifying its status as one of the nation’s top Destination Gardens according to Horticulture Magazine.
