Our Story
The Relief Fund was established on March 15, 2020, by Ethel Branch, the former Navajo Nation Attorney General. Concerned about the health and safety of high-risk families living in extreme food desert conditions on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, Ethel initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for essential food supplies. With an overwhelming response, the campaign raised $5,000 in just one day, allowing the team to provide two weeks' worth of food to families in need, enabling them to safely self-quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Recognizing the urgent need for ongoing support, Ethel collaborated with a group of dedicated Navajo and Hopi women leaders to distribute relief resources across the two nations. To date, the Relief Fund has raised over $18 million and has become a top fundraiser on the platform in 2020. The Utah-based nonprofit, Yee Ha’ólníi Doo, was formed to manage these funds and coordinate efforts with a team of approximately 1,300 volunteers.
Impact
As of July 7, 2021, Yee Ha’ólníi Doo has provided over $10 million in direct relief, including food, water, and personal protective equipment (PPE), to nearly half a million Navajo and Hopi individuals across 106 of the 110 Chapters on the Navajo Nation and all 12 Hopi Villages. The organization has been recognized by the Arizona House and Senate for its significant contributions and received the Community Service and Leadership Award from the Diné Studies Conference.
