Our Story

Founded in 1992 by Maryknoll Sister Joanna Chan, Yangtze Repertory Theatre serves as a vital platform for artists whose work is often overlooked in the United States. This organization has been instrumental in launching the careers of numerous artists, including the renowned Gao Xingjian, the 2000 Nobel Laureate in Literature. Yangtze brought Gao to New York to direct his play, Between Life and Death, and showcase his ink paintings, marking the only full-scale presentations of his works in the U.S. Yangtze is dedicated to uplifting AAPI immigrant voices and creating new works that illuminate rarely told stories.
