About Worker Justice Wisconsin
Founded in 1999, Worker Justice Wisconsin (WJW) emerged from the Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice of South-Central Wisconsin. The organization began with the Latino Worker Project, which investigated workplace conditions in Dane County. This initiative brought together faith leaders, union representatives, and local service providers to highlight the challenges faced by low-wage and immigrant workers.
The findings of the project culminated in the report, “Can’t Afford to Lose a Bad Job,” which underscored the urgent need for a dedicated workers’ rights center. In response, WJW established the Workers’ Rights Center in Madison, providing a space for education, advocacy, and empowerment of workers.
In 2011, WJW gained national recognition for its role in mobilizing a multi-faith community against Act 10, showcasing its commitment to worker rights. The organization underwent a significant transformation in 2018, merging the Workers’ Rights Center and the Interfaith Coalition to create a unified force for worker justice.
Today, WJW focuses on collective organizing and cooperative development, empowering workers to take collective action. Recent initiatives include the incubation of a restaurant and cleaning cooperative, as well as outreach efforts to engage janitorial and food production workers in their workplaces.
