About the Worcester Regional Research Bureau

Founded in the early 1980s, the Worcester Regional Research Bureau emerged from a need for independent, non-partisan public policy research in the City of Worcester and its surrounding communities. As local leaders faced budget constraints from Proposition 2½, a coalition of business leaders came together to establish this vital organization. Modeled after the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, the Worcester Regional Research Bureau began its journey in 1985 with initial pledges of $40,000 and a commitment from Assumption College to provide housing for the organization at a nominal cost.

Over the years, the Bureau has grown in both size and influence, addressing critical issues such as the consolidation of banks and the acquisition of local businesses by larger entities. In response, the Board established the Francis A. Harrington Fund to support public forums and discussions. The Bureau also honors outstanding public service through the Thomas S. Green Public Service Awards, recognizing over 100 municipal employees for their dedication and contributions.

In 2000, the organization rebranded as the Worcester Regional Research Bureau to reflect its broader mission serving Central Massachusetts. Its research has been featured in prominent publications, including the New York Times and the Boston Globe, and has received accolades from various organizations, including the Greater Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce.
