Our Story
The Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project (WLRP) was founded by Jessie 'Little Doe' Baird, a citizen of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, after receiving a sacred message in Wôpanâak during a dream. This initiative aims to restore the Wampanoag language, dormant for over 150 years, through collaborative efforts among the Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet, and Herring Pond Wampanoag communities.
Impact
The WLRP has successfully reclaimed the Wôpanâak language, marking a historic achievement as the first indigenous language to undergo successful reclamation without any speakers. The language is now reintroduced into daily life, preserving the cultural heritage of the Wampanoag people.
Why Donate?
Donations to the WLRP are vital for the reclamation and revitalization of the Wôpanâak language, essential for preserving the cultural identity of the Wampanoag Nation. Contributions fund educational programs, language classes, and cultural initiatives.
