Woodlawn East Community and Neighbors, Inc. (WECAN) has been a cornerstone of the Woodlawn community since 1980. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to addressing the evolving needs of residents by providing affordable housing and essential resources. WECAN has successfully refurbished four buildings, creating 145 units for individuals facing homelessness, while also serving as a vital resource center connecting residents to housing assistance programs.
WECAN's efforts have significantly improved the lives of many in the Woodlawn area. In addition to providing housing, WECAN supports community initiatives such as the Community Economic Development Association’s home energy and weatherization grant program, and afterschool programming for youth. The organization also played a key role in drafting the City of Chicago’s Tenants Bill of Rights, advocating for the rights of renters.
