Founded in 1986, Women in Thoracic Surgery (WTS) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of medical care for patients through the advancement of women in cardiothoracic surgery. The organization began with a simple breakfast meeting organized by Dr. Leslie J. Kohman, which sparked a movement to support women in this challenging field. Since becoming a nonprofit in 2000 and transitioning management to Global Inventures in 2021, WTS has focused on mentorship, education, and advocacy.
