Preservation of Big Band Music

Our Story

What began as a vocational broadcast class on 88.3 FM in 1978 has transformed into WKHR Radio, a cherished platform for Big Band music. Initially broadcasting at just 10 Watts, WKHR was managed by local high school students and adult volunteers. In 1983, the station faced challenges at 100 Watts, but through the dedication of volunteers and generous contributions, it was revitalized as "WKHR Inc." in 1989. This non-profit status allowed WKHR to compete with commercial stations while remaining committed to providing quality, commercial-free music.

In 1995, WKHR received FCC approval to increase its power to 1000 watts, expanding its reach across Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. By September of that year, WKHR transitioned to a new facility at 91.5 FM, broadcasting at 750 watts. The station achieved a significant milestone in 1996 by broadcasting 24/7, solidifying its reputation as Cleveland’s favorite Big Band station, now reaching millions of listeners both locally and online.

Impact

WKHR broadcasts to millions of potential listeners, preserving the cultural heritage of the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s through the timeless sounds of Big Band music.
