Our Story
In 2008, a black lab named Chance endured unimaginable cruelty in Dorr, Michigan. His survival became a beacon of hope for animal welfare in Allegan County. In response to Chance's plight, a dedicated group of animal lovers formed Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance, aiming to improve the lives of pets in West Michigan. When Allegan County Animal Control reached out for assistance with Chance's recovery, the organization stepped up to provide the care he desperately needed.
As Chance healed, the community rallied around Wishbone, allowing it to grow and expand its vision. By 2009, Wishbone took on the management of the Allegan County Animal Shelter, caring for over 3,000 animals each year. This initiative, known as the Animal Shelter Alliance Project (ASAP), has significantly increased the survival rates of shelter animals, with a goal of achieving 100 percent survival and rehoming.
In 2011, Wishbone House opened its doors in Douglas, serving as both a thrift shop and an adoption site for cats. This facility features three cage-free cat-petting rooms and acts as the headquarters for Wishbone Pet Rescue Alliance. Chance's story serves as a constant reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by animals in need, but it also highlights the incredible potential for change through community support.
