Our Story

In the early 1980s, family support groups began forming in Wisconsin to address the needs of families with children facing emotional, behavioral, or mental challenges. In June 1987, a pivotal meeting of 40 parents from nine support groups led to the establishment of Wisconsin Family Ties, a statewide organization dedicated to advocating for improved children’s mental health. As one of the first five statewide organizations in the nation to receive federal demonstration project grant funding, Wisconsin Family Ties has been a trailblazer in ensuring that family needs are understood and their voices amplified.

Impact on Families

The 2017 Wisconsin Family Ties Annual Outcomes Assessment revealed significant improvements in parental empowerment. An impressive 100% of parents engaged with the Parent Peer Specialist Program reported increased empowerment, while 95% felt they became better advocates for their children. This engagement not only enhances family situations but also contributes to potential savings for taxpayers by reducing out-of-home placements.
