Our Story

The Winston-Salem Youth Hockey Association (WSYHA) was founded in 1974 by John Clapp, a passionate hockey enthusiast from Greensboro, NC. With a vision to provide quality hockey experiences for children, the organization quickly grew, fielding multiple teams across various age brackets. Over the years, WSYHA has navigated challenges such as the decline of the Southern Hockey League and the rising costs of ice time, yet it has remained committed to its core mission: ensuring that kids enjoy hockey while developing essential skills.

From humble beginnings playing cross-ice games at a small rink under the former Hyatt House hotel, WSYHA has evolved into a vibrant community of young athletes. The organization continues to honor Mr. Clapp’s legacy by prioritizing fun and skill development in every practice and game.

Impact

WSYHA has successfully created a nurturing environment for youth to engage in hockey, fostering a lifelong love for the sport.
