The Cultural Connections plan laid the groundwork for this ambitious project, leading to the construction of a facility that houses a fine arts museum, the Museum of Scientific Discovery, and a versatile theater.

A Legacy of Philanthropy

In 1993, the journey to bring Whitaker Center to life gained momentum with significant funding from the City of Harrisburg and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Whitaker Foundation's pledge of $7 million in 1994 catalyzed further fundraising efforts, culminating in a total of $16.8 million in contributions from various individuals, foundations, and corporations. Groundbreaking took place in September 1997, and the center officially opened its doors on September 9, 1999, named in honor of Uncas A. Whitaker and his wife, Helen F. Whitaker, whose foundations played a pivotal role in its establishment.
