Our Story
In 1977, a free clinic was established at the Salvation Army Citadel to address the medical needs of the underserved in West Tuscaloosa. Initially operated by University of Alabama medical students, the clinic quickly outgrew its space due to overwhelming demand. Supporters formed a nonprofit corporation, securing federal funding to create a dedicated health care facility. By October 1978, the West Tuscaloosa Community Health Center opened its doors in a renovated church, later named in honor of Maude L. Whatley in 1994. Today, Whatley Health Services continues to expand its reach, providing vital health care to those in need.
