Our Story

The Whales of Guerrero is dedicated to fostering community-driven conservation in the fishing village of Barra de Potosí and the surrounding areas of Guerrero, Mexico. By pioneering a new approach to coastal protection, this organization cultivates local leadership through citizen science, peer learning, and community outreach. After a decade of collaborative marine mammal research, the seeds of stewardship have taken root, and the organization aims to empower emerging Fishery and Conservation Leaders to guide the community towards sustainable marine restoration.

Impact

Participatory marine wildlife surveys provide crucial insights into the local humpback whale population, including size, movement patterns, and interactions with the environment. This research is vital for understanding survival rates of whales entangled in fishing nets, establishing protected migration corridors along the West Coast of North America, and defining distinct population segments of humpback whales.
