Our Story

Founded in 1961 by seven dedicated members of the West Lawn Lions Club, Western Berks Ambulance Association began with a modest $5 contribution from each member to purchase a second-hand ambulance. Over the years, the organization has evolved significantly, establishing its headquarters at 2506 Belmont Avenue in West Lawn in 1971. This facility has been pivotal in housing advanced medical equipment and providing training for volunteers.

In 1977, WBAA made history by acquiring the first Type III "Modular" ambulance in the area, and by 1983, it expanded its services to include Advanced Life Support. As the first volunteer agency to implement the Mobile Intensive Care Unit concept, WBAA has consistently pushed the boundaries of emergency medical services.

With the implementation of Pennsylvania’s Emergency Medical Services Act of 1985, WBAA adapted to meet the community's needs by ensuring 24/7 availability of ALS services. This commitment has led to the growth of career opportunities for Paramedics, EMTs, and support staff, allowing the organization to thrive.

Our Impact

As the largest non-profit ambulance service in Berks County, WBAA responds to thousands of emergency calls and non-emergency transports each year. The dedication of our highly trained Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians ensures that the community receives timely and effective medical care.
