About the West Virginia Youth Symphony
The West Virginia Youth Symphony, established in 1949, has a rich history of fostering musical talent among young people in the state. Originally organized as the Kanawha Valley Youth Orchestra by the Charleston Woman’s Club, it has evolved into the largest and oldest youth orchestra in West Virginia. With a commitment to providing opportunities for young musicians, the organization has continuously operated since its incorporation in 1968.
Musical Opportunities for Young Talent
Each year, approximately 125 young musicians, aged 7 to 20, come together from 36 public and private schools, as well as home-school programs, to rehearse weekly in Charleston. The West Virginia Youth Symphony offers various ensembles, including the Cadet Strings, Youth Strings, and the Youth Orchestra, which features the most advanced string players alongside winds, brass, and percussion. Additionally, the Wind Ensemble and Youth Winds groups provide further opportunities for skill advancement.
Performance and Community Engagement
The Youth Symphony hosts two main concerts annually, along with performances at Symphony Sunday and various public events such as Charleston’s Good Night and Art Walk. Students also have the chance to form chamber groups, receiving individual instruction and showcasing their talents in a dedicated Chamber Concert.
International Exposure and Cultural Exchange
In its pursuit of musical excellence, the West Virginia Youth Symphony has organized several European Performance Tours, allowing students to perform in iconic locations while learning about diverse musical traditions. These tours have included visits to cities like Prague, Vienna, and Florence, where students not only performed but also engaged with local musicians, enriching their cultural experience.
Commitment to Education and Excellence
All conductors and coaches are professional musicians affiliated with the West Virginia Symphony, ensuring that students receive top-notch instruction. The organization emphasizes the importance of music education, requiring members to take music classes in their schools when available. Many WVYS members excel academically, often taking AP and Honors classes as they prepare for their futures.
Impact of the West Virginia Youth Symphony
The West Virginia Youth Symphony provides superior music education opportunities to nearly 115 students each year.
