Our Story

In the 1950s, options for individuals with developmental disabilities were severely limited. Tom and Anne Sell, parents of a daughter with Down syndrome, recognized the need for better support and convened a meeting in their Needham home. This gathering led to the establishment of a preschool in 1956 at Carter Memorial Methodist Church, serving twelve children for just $1 a month. Today, the Charles River Center has grown significantly, operating 28 group homes and providing essential services to over 950 children and adults in the Boston MetroWest area.
