About the West Indian American Day Carnival Association
Founded in the 1930s by Ms. Jessie Wardell and her West Indian friends, the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) began as a series of costume parties in Harlem. The first street parade took place in the 1940s, marking the beginning of a vibrant tradition. In the 1960s, Rufus Goring brought the Carnival to Brooklyn, where it has flourished under the leadership of Carlos Lezama and Thomas Bailey.
