Empowering Marginalized Refugees

Our Story

The Welcome Project emerged from a collaboration between Calcagno Cullen, Director of Wave Pool Art Center, and Sheryl Rajbhandari, Director of Heartfelt Tidbits. Initially offering art classes to refugees, the project quickly evolved as participants expressed a desire to sell their creations and establish a dedicated space for their work. When a building adjacent to Wave Pool became available, The Welcome Project was born, with its name, logo, and vibrant colors designed by the women involved. Today, it serves as a thriving community hub, partnering with various organizations to support Cincinnati’s refugee and immigrant communities.

Our Impact

Wave Pool is a socially-engaged art center that fosters community change through artist opportunities and support. Each week, approximately 30 refugee and immigrant artists, chefs, and makers gather at The Welcome Project, sharing their unique stories and talents. This initiative empowers individuals to express themselves through art, build friendships, and overcome barriers related to employment and housing.
