Our Story

In 1990, Debra Smyers initiated a movement to combat food waste by approaching a local supermarket for short-dated food to support a Jacksonville soup kitchen. This simple act of kindness led to the establishment of Waste Not Want Not, which evolved from a volunteer group under a church to an independent nonprofit in 2004. By 2008, the organization required a larger facility due to its rapid growth, and by 2010, it had rescued over a million pounds of food in just one year. Today, Waste Not Want Not consistently rescues 2 million pounds of food annually, having provided 2.1 million pounds during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Since its inception, the organization has rescued over 27.5 million pounds of food, serving 14 counties across North Florida.
