Empowering Literacy in Washington, DC

The Washington Literacy Center (WLC) has been a beacon of hope for DC residents facing significant barriers to education since 1963. Originally an all-volunteer initiative, WLC has evolved into a dynamic nonprofit dedicated to teaching essential skills for success in the 21st century. With a mission to combat low literacy rates, WLC serves over 119,000 adults in Washington, DC, helping them overcome challenges such as dyslexia and other educational barriers.

Impacting Lives Through Education

WLC removes barriers by providing direct instruction in reading, math, digital literacy, and workforce skills. This empowers adults who read below a fifth-grade level to pursue GED programs and job training, ultimately improving their quality of life.
