About Washington Innocence Project

Founded in 1997 by Professor Jacqueline McMurtrie, the Washington Innocence Project, originally known as Innocence Project Northwest, is dedicated to the mission of freeing innocent individuals wrongfully convicted of crimes. Over the years, this organization has grown into a vital force for justice, exonerating 15 men and women who collectively spent 276 years incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. With the support of dedicated staff, students, and pro bono partners, the Washington Innocence Project continues to advocate for systemic reforms in the criminal legal system.
