Our Story

The Washington Area Humane Society, established in 1906 through the vision of Clara C.B. Lockhart, has dedicated over a century to rescuing and rehoming animals in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Originally founded to care for over 1,000 animals on a farm, WAHS has transformed into a no-kill shelter, opening a new facility in 2019 to enhance its mission. Each year, WAHS provides humane care and placement for approximately 1,000 animals, ensuring they find loving homes.

Our Impact

In 2023, WAHS achieved an impressive live release rate of 95%, positively impacting over 5,000 pets through various programs, including intakes, foster homes, and adoptions.
