Our Story

In 2003, a dedicated group of healthcare professionals, business leaders, and community volunteers established Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires Inc (ViM) in response to alarming findings from a Harvard Medical School study on uninsured adults in the region. ViM operates on the belief that health is influenced by living conditions such as housing, food, employment, and childcare. This holistic approach enables ViM to restore health and instill hope in patients. Today, approximately 70 volunteer healthcare providers and 100 support volunteers deliver care to around 1,300 patients through over 6,500 visits annually.

Impact

ViM serves 1,729 patients, preventing $1.4 million in annual emergency room and hospitalization costs. The organization has successfully maintained zero Covid-related hospitalizations or deaths among its patients, showcasing its vital role in providing essential health services to underserved populations.
