About VIVA

Founded in 1981, Volunteers For Inter-Valley Animals (VIVA) has been a beacon of hope for animals in need. Initially established to enhance conditions at the County Animal Shelter, VIVA has made significant strides in animal welfare. From raising funds to purchase cages that allowed cats to be seen in a brighter environment to initiating the Pet of the Week Program with the Lompoc Record, VIVA has consistently worked towards improving the lives of animals.

Over the years, VIVA has expanded its efforts, including a shuttle service to the Santa Barbara Humane Society for low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, successfully spaying and neutering over 4,000 cats. The establishment of the VIVA Thrift Store in 1985 provided a platform for adoption and funding, while the opening of Sylvester House in 1990 offered a retirement home for older cats. Today, VIVA operates one of the finest cageless cat shelters in the area, thanks to the dedication of volunteers and generous donors.

Impact

With approximately 2.4 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs euthanized in U.S. shelters each year, VIVA is committed to making Santa Barbara County a no-kill region, ensuring every adoptable animal finds a loving home.
