Violence Intervention Program
EIN: 13-3540337 · New York, NY
Our Story
The Violence Intervention Program (VIP) was established in 1984 by Black and Latinx survivors and organizers who recognized the urgent need for culturally specific survivor services. Initially a program of the East Harlem Council of Human Services, VIP emerged from the anti-violence movements of the late 1970s and early 1980s. These dedicated women created community-based interventions for intimate partner violence and sexual assault, establishing networks of support to address basic needs and advocating for culturally responsive programming.
Impact
Since becoming an independent nonprofit in 1989, VIP has become New York City’s first and only culturally specific organization dedicated to aiding Latinx survivors of domestic and sexual violence. VIP has supported thousands of survivors and their children, standing as a testament to its ongoing commitment to empower Latinx survivors and build stronger communities.
