Our Story

In 1964, Dr. Karl Menninger recognized a critical need in his community, leading to the establishment of The Villages, Inc. This organization was founded on the belief that children who have experienced abuse, neglect, and abandonment can heal and thrive in a nurturing environment. Dr. Menninger's vision was to create a model where children could learn from caring adults in a well-maintained home, surrounded by nature.

In December 1969, The Villages, Inc. opened its first home in Topeka, providing a safe haven for three young boys. Over the years, the organization expanded, adding more homes and eventually extending its reach to Lawrence, Kansas, and various locations in Indiana. Today, The Villages, Inc. oversees five homes in Topeka and two in Lawrence, all situated on over 400 acres of protected land.
