Our Story

The Village Lions Rugby Club was founded in 1989 at the Red Lion Pub in Greenwich Village, New York City, by Alan Whelan. Starting with a diverse group of bartenders, bouncers, and rugby enthusiasts, the club quickly gained recognition in the Met NY union, winning titles in its early years. Over the decades, it has evolved to include both men's and women's teams, achieving national championships and international tours.

Our Impact

The Village Lions Rugby Club has successfully fostered a vibrant rugby community in NYC, promoting inclusivity and athletic excellence. The women's team has achieved significant success, including multiple national championships, while the men's team has also climbed through the ranks of competitive rugby.
