Our Story
In 1895, fourteen visionary women in Bucks County came together to address the health concerns caused by dusty roads. This gathering led to the formation of the Village Improvement Association (VIA), dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Central Bucks community. The VIA's early initiatives included eliminating dust from the streets and establishing the first visiting nurse service in Doylestown. In 1923, the organization proudly founded Doylestown Hospital, which has since become a nationally recognized community hospital.
Today, the VIA boasts a membership of over 300 women who actively contribute to the hospital and the community. The organization not only focuses on health services but also provides one-time grants to local initiatives, educational scholarships for high school seniors pursuing health-related careers, and emergency support through its Welfare Fund. The VIA operates from the historic James-Lorah Memorial Home, a testament to its rich legacy and commitment to community service.
With a mission to enhance the health and welfare of residents, the VIA has initiated numerous programs that support and beautify Bucks County. The VIA Health System, established in 1986, has allowed for greater efficiency and diversification in operations, ensuring that the organization continues to meet the evolving needs of the community.
