Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial Fund
EIN: 93-0831348 · Portland, OR
Our Story
The Vietnam Veterans of Oregon Memorial Fund was established by veterans who were inspired to create a memorial honoring the 828 Oregonians who lost their lives in Vietnam. This vision took shape after a profound experience at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. in 1982. Founders Jerry Pero and Ben Stanley, along with fellow veterans, sought to build a 'Welcome Home' for those who served. Despite facing challenges such as public indifference and the need for substantial fundraising, the community rallied together, leading to the dedication of the Living Memorial in Hoyt Arboretum, Portland, on November 11, 1987.
Impact
The Living Memorial serves as a serene space for reflection and healing, fostering a sense of community among Vietnam veterans and their families. It honors the sacrifices made and promotes reconciliation, providing solace to those affected by the Vietnam War.
