About Viet Rainbow of Orange County

Viet Rainbow of Orange County (VROC) was founded by a passionate group of five individuals who sought to celebrate the Vietnamese American community while representing the vibrant Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. The journey began in 2013 when VROC applied to participate in the Tet Parade in Little Saigon, only to face rejection based on discriminatory beliefs that excluded LGBT identities from Vietnamese culture.

Despite the initial setback, VROC's determination led to a powerful movement advocating for visibility and inclusion. Through media outreach, community engagement, and support from local and national organizations, VROC fought against discrimination and worked tirelessly to ensure that the voices of the Viet LGBT community were heard. On February 10, 2013, over 250 members of the Viet LGBT contingent and allies marched proudly, showcasing their existence and demanding recognition.

Following the parade, VROC continued its advocacy efforts by collaborating with local government officials to push for non-discriminatory policies. Although the city did not amend its special permit processes, VROC's commitment to equality and justice remained unwavering. The organization has since evolved into a community-based entity dedicated to empowering individuals and fostering a sense of belonging within the Vietnamese diaspora.

Today, VROC focuses on engagement, education, advocacy, and supportive services to promote positive visibility of the LGBT community. By eliminating fear and inspiring compassion, VROC aims to create a more equitable and unified society for all. The organization has garnered recognition from prominent media outlets such as the LA Times, OC Register, GLAAD, NPR-KPCC, and the Associated Press for its impactful work.
