Our Story
Founded in January 1961, Variety School of Hawaii began as the Honolulu Day School, addressing the urgent educational needs of young children diagnosed with neurological dysfunctions, now recognized as Specific Learning Disabilities. At a time when these children were often excluded from public education, the school provided a vital lifeline, ensuring that every child had the opportunity to learn and thrive.
In 1975, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted, mandating free and appropriate education for all children, regardless of disability. This pivotal moment reinforced the mission of Variety School, which had already expanded its reach from two children to forty, thanks to the support of the Variety Club Tent 50, a group of dedicated members from the entertainment industry.
Over the years, the school has evolved, moving to Central Union Church and later to its current location near Diamond Head in 1976. With the commitment of supporters like Carole Kai, who championed fundraising efforts, Variety School has continued to grow, providing specialized education for children facing challenges in socialization, communication, and cognitive development.
