Our Story

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UCIMC) was founded in 2000 by passionate individuals inspired by the IndyMedia movement. This initiative emerged in response to the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, aiming to create a local media democracy organization. Over the years, UCIMC has evolved into a nationally recognized model for community media, offering services such as a community radio station, media training, and arts initiatives. The organization has successfully connected local residents to broader social justice movements, making significant contributions to the community, including the Books to Prisoners project and the development of open-source technology for community connectivity.

Impact

UCIMC has supported over 1000 volunteers, equating to 24 full-time staff, and has become an internationally recognized model for community media. It has shipped over 150,000 free books to prisoners and developed open-source mesh network technology, connecting local residents to advocacy efforts for net neutrality and broadband access.
