About Urban Assembly
Founded in the 1990s by builder Richard Kahan, Urban Assembly has been a pioneer in public education reform. Partnering with the New York City Department of Education, the organization established the Urban Assembly Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice in 1997. Over the years, Urban Assembly has opened more than 20 small, career-themed public schools, collaborating with various partners to enhance educational opportunities for students of color and those from low-income backgrounds.
Impact on Education
Today, Urban Assembly works with schools and districts to design and implement solutions that improve social-emotional learning, postsecondary readiness, and instructional quality. With a network of 22 high-performing schools, Urban Assembly boasts a graduation rate of 91%, significantly higher than the citywide average of 81%. This success demonstrates the organization's commitment to closing the opportunity gap.
