Empowering Youth Through Community Service

Founded in 2010, Upward Roots is dedicated to empowering youth to become leaders and changemakers in their communities. With a focus on youth-led, youth-driven initiatives, the organization launched its first pilot program at Esperanza Academy in East Oakland, engaging 28 students. Since then, Upward Roots has expanded its reach, enrolling over 2,000 students across 20 Title I elementary schools in Oakland.

Making a Lasting Impact

Over 160 youth-led community service projects have been executed, showcasing the potential of young leaders. An impressive 97% of participants represent ethnic and racial minorities, and 87% of youth report viewing themselves as catalysts for change after participating in the program.
