Our Story

The Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone was established in 1994 under federal legislation championed by Congressman Charles B. Rangel. This initiative aims to uplift communities with the highest poverty rates, as identified by the 1990 Census. Since its inception in 1995, UMEZ has been dedicated to fostering economic development and revitalization in Upper Manhattan.

Our Impact

UMEZ has successfully leveraged over $1.5 billion in private capital, resulting in the creation of nearly 12,000 direct jobs in the region.
