Empowering Youth Through Theatre Arts

Founded in the wake of the Rodney King incident by visionary artist and philanthropist Laura Leigh Hughes, The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company harnesses the transformative power of theatre as a vehicle for social empowerment. This nonprofit organization provides free access to year-long youth theatre residencies, focusing on the creation and performance of original plays, while also exposing participants to professional theatre performances.

Since its inception in 1993, The Unusual Suspects has grown from serving just 50 participants in Van Nuys to impacting over 3,500 youth across more than 20 communities in Los Angeles in 2023 alone. As the organization celebrates its thirtieth anniversary, it reflects on the invaluable contributions of participants, teaching artists, staff, volunteers, board members, and supporters who have made this dream a reality.

Looking ahead, The Unusual Suspects is excited to launch a four-year theatre conservatory program in 2024, offering high-school-age youth specialized training in writing, acting, directing, and production design. Additionally, a vocational training program will equip community members with essential skills in costume, set, lighting, and sound design. Over the next five years, the organization aims to establish a state-of-the-art performing arts space, fostering creativity and collaboration among young artists from diverse backgrounds.
