Transforming Lives Through Technology Education

Unloop was founded in 2015 by a group of passionate tech enthusiasts who recognized a critical gap in access to software development education for currently and formerly incarcerated individuals. After visiting a coding program at Peninsula College inside Clallam Bay Corrections Center, the need for more inclusive educational opportunities became evident. In collaboration with Tacoma Community College, Unloop launched its first one-year cohort at the Washington Corrections Center for Women in 2016, followed by another cohort at Monroe Correctional Complex in 2017 with Edmonds College.

Since then, Unloop has graduated hundreds of students, providing them with the skills necessary to thrive in the tech industry. In 2019, the focus shifted towards reentry services, helping graduates navigate their transition back into society. The introduction of the Unloop Bootcamp and an industry mentor program has further solidified the organization’s commitment to creating pathways to living wage careers in software development.

In 2020, Unloop expanded its offerings with the launch of Unloop Studio, an in-house software development agency that serves as a social enterprise. Today, the Unloop community includes hundreds of students, alumni, technologists, educators, advocates, donors, and partners, all dedicated to building a brighter future for individuals with criminal records.
