Our Story
United Way of South Mississippi was established in June 1992 through the merger of three smaller United Ways in Hancock, Harrison, and Pearl River Counties. This consolidation aimed to streamline operations and reduce confusion for donors and charities. However, the roots of this organization trace back to 1952 with the founding of the Community Chest in Gulfport and surrounding areas. United Way's mission is to enhance lives by mobilizing community resources to advance the common good. By organizing a single fundraising drive, United Way addresses the inefficiencies of competing appeals, ensuring that contributions effectively support local needs.
