Empowering Athletes with Visual Impairments

Founded in 1976 by Dr. Charles Buell, the United States Association for Blind Athletes (USABA) has dedicated itself to improving the lives of individuals who are blind and visually impaired. The journey began with 27 young athletes representing the United States in the first Olympiad for the Disabled in Toronto, Canada. This pivotal moment sparked a movement among national leaders, educators, and coaches to create an organization that would structure, promote, and sponsor competitions for visually impaired athletes across the nation.

Today, USABA stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, providing life-enriching sports programs to thousands of children, youth, adults, and veterans. From grassroots initiatives to elite Paralympic competitions, USABA serves athletes of all ages and abilities. As a proud member of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and US Soccer, USABA was certified in January 2022 as the official National Governing Body for goalball and blind soccer. This recognition underscores USABA's commitment to fostering a vibrant sports community for individuals with visual impairments.

In addition to goalball and blind soccer, USABA offers a diverse range of athletic opportunities, including track and field, Nordic and alpine skiing, biathlon, judo, wrestling, swimming, tandem cycling, and powerlifting. These programs empower athletes to develop independence through competition, allowing them to experience the thrill of victory and the lessons of defeat, just like their sighted peers.

Moreover, USABA is dedicated to changing societal perceptions about the abilities of blind individuals. By educating the public and training athletes to engage with schools and community organizations, USABA actively combats negative stereotypes and promotes inclusivity.
