Our Story

The United Methodist City Society has a rich history dating back to 1838, originally founded as the Sunday School Society to promote quality religious education and support Methodist congregations. Over the years, it has evolved significantly, incorporating as the New York City Sunday School and Missionary Society in 1866 and later becoming the New York City Church Extension and Missionary Society in 1871. The organization played a crucial role in establishing new congregations and expanding the Methodist community across New York City.

In 1971, the New York City Society and the Brooklyn and Long Island Church Society merged to form the United Methodist City Society, which continues to serve the community today. With subsidiaries like Anchor House, The United Methodist Center in Far Rockaway, and the Olmsted Center, the organization is dedicated to providing a wide range of social services while supporting Methodist churches.
