Our Story

United Family Medicine has a rich history of providing compassionate healthcare services that began in the 1930s with the Wilder Clinic. Initially offering free and low-cost care at Miller Hospital, the organization evolved through various transitions, including the merger of Miller Hospital and Saint Luke’s Hospital in 1971, which led to the establishment of the Helping Hand Health Center under Dr. Tim Rumsey. In 1992, the Helping Hand Health Center merged with another clinic to form United Family Practice Health Center.

In 1993, the organization launched the United Family Medicine Residency Program, dedicated to training new physicians in primary healthcare for all ages. Achieving independent status as a Federally Qualified Health Center look-alike in 2004 and full FQHC status in 2012, United Family Medicine has remained committed to its mission of excellence in healthcare delivery and training future healthcare providers. The move to our current facility on Randolph Avenue in 2009 allowed for expanded services to meet the growing health demands of the St. Paul community.
