In 2006, Chris Hardy's life changed forever while training dogs in Afghanistan. A chance encounter with a severely burned toddler in a hospital revealed the profound healing power of dogs. As the little girl reached out to Chris's dog, Dirk, a magical connection blossomed, pulling her from a state of hopelessness. This moment ignited Chris's passion to use dogs to help those in need, especially disabled veterans.

In 2014, Chris and his wife, Mirela, founded U.S. Kennels with a mission to match rescue dogs with disabled veterans. The organization opened its training facility in 2017, where Chris finds suitable dogs from Delmarva shelters and pairs them with veterans. Over the course of a year or more, these teams undergo training to become fully certified service dogs, providing invaluable support and companionship.

Despite the challenges faced, including the emotional toll of PTSD, Chris remains dedicated to helping veterans reclaim their independence and improve their quality of life. U.S. Kennels has successfully matched numerous veterans with service dogs, offering free training and ongoing support. Each match not only saves a shelter dog from euthanasia but also transforms the life of a veteran.
